How long does this breakdown usually take?
I usually try to limit the breakdowns to a couple of minutes if I can- depending on complexity of course. I feel that participants start to get bored and the energy drops out of the class.
My breakdown method is very similar to yours- borrowing the move that self reverses to get to the other leg in 8 and 16 count blocks. Most of my participants are regulars, so the breakdowns get shorter and shorter the longer I use the combination from class to class (week to week).

Hello Ralph, I don't try to limit the time of the teaching progression in any way. I do it everytime as long as it stays fully balanced and every regular participant can follow me. The step training is in my comprehension not only the final choreography but mainly the teaching progression. You know: "The way is the goal". Only the remaining time is used to let the people run the choreography (some final song is great at this part). I rewrite my choreography and the teaching progression afresh for nearly every class.
